How to Create a Live Effect

Enable Lightform Labs to create a Live effect

Once Labs is enabled:

  1. Add a built-in Effect or Generator to a Surface
  2. Go to its Properties
  3. Click the 'Live' button so it turns red to make it Live

When you toggle the 'Live' button on an Effect or Generator layer, it renders that layer in real-time after your project publishes  Generally, when you publish your project, the entire published project is a pre-rendered video. A live effect (if present) is rendered on top of this pre-rendered video so you can modify its properties 'live' and see it change instantaneously.

Only Effects and Generators can be Live because they are created from shader code files that run directly on your Lightform device.

Please note: you can only have one Live layer per slide, and it will be moved above all other layers.

What can you do with a Live Effect?

  1. Modify Effect Properties Manually When an Effect or Generator is 'Live', you will see its properties displayed on the Control Page. You can modify these controls in real time while your published project is playing by dragging sliders and changing values.
  2. Modify Effect Properties with OSC Alternatively, you can modify these controls from third-party apps via OSC such as TouchOSC, which provides a controller interface on your phone or tablet.
  3. Use Effect with Audio Reactivity filters The Audio Reactive Filters, Time Warp, and Time Jump, only respond to Live Effects. The behavior of the Wiggle filter is different depending on if your effect is Live or not.
